A coalition of Bay Area water agencies has unveiled a $19.7 million system of high-tech radar stations from Sonoma County to Santa Cruz. The new radar installations, located in Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Marin and Sonoma counties, can track storms with higher resolution and faster updates than the current National Weather Service radar stations. The stations also provide updated images every 1 to 2 minutes, instead of 5 to 7 minutes. The Advanced Quantitative Precipitation Information (AQPI) project has been under development, construction and testing since 2018 and is the first of its kind in the state. Funding for the project came from the state Department of Water Resources.
