Bill to ban debit card surcharges passes out La. Senate

A bill that would prohibit retail businesses from charging surcharges when customers use debit cards has passed in the Louisiana Legislature. The bill would allow for civil fines of up to $500 for businesses that do not comply, which would be paid to the state attorney general. It also requires the attorney general's office to create a toll-free phone number and electronic reporting system for consumers who find an unlawful surcharge on their account. The final passage of Senate Bill passed with a vote of 35-0.
