Leaders from the city of Wichita and Sedgwick County met to discuss fire department consolidation and concerns over a property tax relief bill. The bill would allow taxpayers to petition if property valuation increases go above 3%, which could affect the city and county's contracts with municipal bonds. This could force them to break these contracts, leading to higher bond interest. Mayor Lily Wu of Wichita expressed unified concern about the bill, stating that it could limit the ability of the city to provide new fire stations through debt. The proposal to merge the city, county fire departments was also discussed. The council also agreed to commission a study on fire consolidation to get a third-party opinion.
