Researchers from the University of Buffalo have found that cannabis-infused beverages can reduce alcohol consumption by nearly half. The study, titled The Exploration of Cannabis Beverage Substitution for Alcohol: A Novel Harm Reduction Strategy, surveyed 438 anonymous adults who reported using cannabis in the past year. It found that people who consumed cannabis were more likely to substitute it for alcohol than those who consumed it in other forms. The number of alcoholic drinks consumed decreased from 7.02 per week before CBD beverages, to 3.55 per week after. The findings suggest that cannabis beverages may support alcohol substitution and reduce alcohol-related harms. However, Jessica Kruger, the study's first author, cautioned that there is a long way to go before cannabis beverages are seen as mainstream.
