Donations meet disruption: Nonprofits navigate the AI era with mix of enthusiasm and anxiety

The rise of AI technology in the social sector is causing concern among non-profit organizations across the world, with organizations using it to identify future supply needs and search its manuals database for specific fixes. Doug Jackson, CEO of Project C.U.R.E.E., a nonprofit providing medical aid, believes that AI can help solve problems such as repair manuals for X-ray machines, anesthesia equipment, and other medical devices. The Global Nonprofit Leadership Summit in Bellevue, Wash., focused on accelerating AI adoption and agentic tools, but the gap between the technology's potential and the cost, skills and time required to deploy it is often underestimated. Microsoft has unveiled Microsoft Elevate for Changemakers, a program that includes a “AI for Nonprofits” credential, live and on-demand instruction modules, and a global cohort of fellows deploying AI in their operations. The initiative is funded by Microsoft, EY, Caribou, and others. Microsoft President Brad Smith suggested that overcoming fears and building support for AI is one of the best ways to overcome fears and build support for the technology. The tech giant committed to providing more than $5 billion in support for nonprofits over the next year through discounts and donations of its technology and grants.
