W Wagner Moura's latest film, The Secret Agent, is set in Brazil in 1977, during the country's time when it was under an oppressive political dictatorship. The film, directed by Moura’s friend Kleber Mendonça Filho, has been well received globally, particularly in the United States. Moura plays a research scientist who becomes a government target and is the main character on the run. He believes that the film has resonated with viewers due to their perceived threat of authoritarianism in Brazil. Despite not winning a Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival, both the film and Moura were nominated for four Academy Awards. Despite his understated charm and mischievous sense of humor, Moura still values the grounding of his journalism training and objectivity.
