The University of North Carolina has suspended discussions about the future of the Smith Center in order to focus on the hiring of its next men's basketball coach. The decision comes after North Carolina fired coach Hubert Davis following a disappointing season. The school's vice chancellor for communications Dean Stoyer stated that the need to remove any potential distractions from the search process and allow the new coach to develop his program. The Smith Center, named after former UNC coach Dean E. Smith, has been the Tar Heels' home since 1986 but lacks revenue-generating amenities like luxury boxes, club seats or suites. A new arena is projected to cost nearly $800 million and a massive renovation could cost about $600 million.
