A study by researchers at Mass General Brigham has found that long-term exposure to excess weight is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular disease risk than a single BMI. The study, funded by Eli Lilly and Company and the National Institutes of Health, found that the effect was particularly prevalent in younger people. The researchers analyzed data from 136,498 participants in the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. They found a strong association between long-time exposure to excessive weight and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. The findings suggest that losing weight and reducing exposure to extra weight may lower a person's cardiovascular risk.
