A severe thunderstorm warning has been put in effect for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties in New Jersey, with gusts as high as 60 mph expected. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for these areas, which may include Summit and Millburn, Linden and Caldwell, Newark and Elizabeth, Jersey City and Passaic, and Paterson and Secaucus. The warning also includes potential damage to trees and power lines. Each year, lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times, mostly during the summer, killing about 20 people per year.
