New long-range forecast model data has sparked speculation about a possible "Super El Niño" later this year. However, experts say the outlook is still uncertain and more complicated than a viral headline suggests. The term "super El Niño", which is not officially recognized by major weather and climate agencies, is used by some scientists and media outlets to highlight particularly strong events. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has indicated the potential for particularly warm ocean water in the tropical eastern Pacific by the fall, which is an indicator of an El Niño pattern. NOAA's latest outlook highlights an 80% chance of a "strong" El Niño developing this fall and lasting through the winter. The next update to this outlook will be released on April 9.
