The Philadelphia region's utility companies, PECO and Philadelphia Gas Works, have reported significant increases in energy usage this winter due to prolonged frigid temperatures in the city. The largest energy provider in the region saw PECo residential customers use 12% more electricity and 19% more natural gas in January compared to typical winter averages over the past decade. Meanwhile, PGW customers used roughly 40% more gas during a cold snap between Jan. 24 and Feb. 9, and the average PGW residential bill was nearly $237, up from $198 in January. The increase in utility costs is also attributed to fluctuating supply costs, which have risen by up to 80% over the last few years.
