Archer Aviation, a developer of electric air taxi technology, has responded to a lawsuit by rival Joby Aviation by alleging that Joby used Chinese manufacturing subsidiary to source critical components from Chinese suppliers with Chinese government support. The counterclaim alleges that the company also misclassified thousands of pounds of Chinese-origin aircraft materials as consumer goods to evade U.S. tariffs and foreign-influence oversight. Joby was founded in 2009 in California and has facilities in several other U.,S. cities and operates internationally in Germany, Austria, Costa Rica, and Shenzhen, China. The timing of Archer's counterclaim is notable as it comes four months after Joby sued Archer over allegations of trade secret theft. Both companies are currently pursuing similar markets and are seeking defense applications for their technology.
