The family of an 85-year-old Big Island man, Arthur Russell, is seeking a refund after he unknowingly purchased a $5,000 life insurance policy that costs him about $1,000 per year. Russell, who completed the transaction over the phone, said he believed he was signing up for car insurance and had no idea he was purchasing the policy. His daughter, Kelli, discovered the policy when Prudential Life Insurance sent a notice that he needed to renew his debit card. The company required proof that Russell lacked the mental capacity to handle his own financial or other affairs. Hawaii Insurance Commissioner Scott Saiki warned of the growing problem of misinformed life insurance sales, particularly among seniors concerned about going without coverage.
