The American Economic Liberties Project (AELP) has led a campaign against the appointment of economist Casey Mulligan to oversee regulatory issues at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHS). The AELP is upset that Mulligan has published research defending entities challenging Big Pharma in the US healthcare system. Mulligan found that pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) provide $148 billion in cost savings annually. However, challenging these interests of major drug companies is seen as a sin to many special interest groups, including the American Economic Liberty Project (ALP). The group claims to represent American workers but also supports the federal government as a powerful monopoly. They are also trying to co-opt the populist energy that President Trump has brought to the table and implement socialist policies.
