Virginia voters narrowly approved a redistricting referendum, which could determine which party controls the House of the Representatives after the 2026 midterms. The measure passed in a 50% to 49% vote, which is expected to result in a significant power swing, giving Democrats control of all but one of the state's 11 congressional seats. The new map aims to shift Virginia's congressional delegation from a 6-5 to a 10-1 split. President Trump warned that the redistricting effort would have major consequences for the entire country. The referendum also sought to amend Virginia’s constitution to give the Democrat-majority General Assembly power to redraw congressional district lines. This is part of a larger trend of redistricting aimed at helping Republicans in the midterm elections.
