Why Big Tech wants to save the grid
Published on March 25, 2026.
Technology and energy companies are rallying to fix the grid at the CERAWeek by S&P Global conference in Houston, with more data center developers considering skipping grid hook-ups to generate their own on-site power generation. However, this strategy could be costly and risky. Companies are using mobile gas generators and even repurposed aircraft turbines to bypass long lines for connecting to the grid. Fermi America is among the projects planning to largely forgo the grid, with plans to power a massive data center complex in Texas with onsite gas, nuclear and solar generation. There is widespread talk of developing semiconductors that require less electricity and requiring data centers to use less power during peak demand times. Google recently announced it is integrating a gigawatt of “demand response” into its utility contracts in the South and Midwest.
