17-Year-Old Girl and Captain Die After Being Thrown into Water When 2 Boats Capsize on School Trip

A 17-year-old girl and a boat captain have died after two boats capsized off the coast of Japan during a school trip. The incident occurred off Henoko, the site of a controversial U.S. military base relocation. The Japan Coast Guard said 18 high school students were on the two boats, the Heiwa-maru and the Fukutsu, when they were thrown into the water. The victims have been identified as 17-years-old Tomoka Takeishi and 71-year old Hajime Kanai. Four people, including the two victims, were taken to hospitals with undisclosed injuries. All 21 people on the boats were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
