Four San Diego-area families are accusing Rady Children’s Health of violating the civil rights of their transgender children by discontinuing gender-affirming care. The class action lawsuit, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, accuses the regional health system of discriminating against transgender children in violation of multiple state laws. The lawsuit also alleges that the roughly 1,900 patients of Rady's gender clinic have been unable to access medications such as hormone therapy due to the hospital's decision to discontinue the care. Rady, which operates hospitals across San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties, announced in late January that it would no longer provide such care due to federal actions. The Trump administration has characterized transgender health procedures as "chemical and surgical mutilation" and directed federal agencies to defund any supportive programs.
