Senior White House adviser Calley Means, the brother of surgeon general nominee Casey Means, has stated that “conversations are ongoing” regarding her nomination for the position. This comes amid doubts over whether she has enough votes in the Senate for confirmation. The confirmation process has been stalled since she was nominated in May of last year and has been uncertain since a tense Senate committee hearing in February. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La), chair of the Senate Health Committee, has yet to schedule a vote on her nomination. She would likely need unanimous support from Republicans to advance, but at least two have been hesitant to support her. Calley Me, a senior White House advisor, dismissed any notion that his sister lacks the votes to move forward. He suggested that the surgeon general nomination had been character assassinated” in the media but that senators are understanding that senators want a surgeon general who will critically think about the root cause of chronic disease.
