A bill that allows adults in Oklahoma to receive gender-affirming care has advanced to the Senate, despite some concerns that it could prevent children from accessing mental health counseling. The bill, authored by Rep. Kevin West, would change what is considered a gender transition procedure in state law and allow health care providers who violate this ban to be pursued for punitive damages. It also expands the definition of health care provider to include psychologists, counselors, therapists, social workers and behavioral health practitioners. Critics argue that the change could put children at higher risk of suicide and self-harm. The House approved the bill with a 71-21 vote, three Republicans voted against it.
