The Oklahoma Advisory Council on Indian Education (18-seat council) could be discontinued unless the state Legislature reverses a governor's veto. Gov. Kevin Stitt has vetoed legislation extending the council's existence for another five years, citing its lack of transparency and failure to meet with the state Department of Education. The council, founded in 2010, provides recommendations about issues affecting Native American students' education and the teaching of tribal history. Stitt argued that the council had not functioned as an active or effective body and had not operated with proper transparency. The state Education Department, which facilitates the council’s meetings, said the council has met seven times since late 2023 and is scheduled to meet again on June 17.
