Scientists have cured type 1 diabetes in mice without long-term immune suppression, using a "chimeric" or blended immune system that contains elements from both the recipient's and donor's immune systems. This enabled mice to tolerate a transplant of insulin-producing cells without the need for strong immunosuppressants for life. The process required multiple antibodies, low-dose radiation and a rheumatoid arthritis drug called baricitinib to create a more balanced immune system. If successful in humans, this could potentially reverse the disease. The researchers' findings could help prevent heart disease, kidney disease, and eye damage among those with type 1 Diabetes.
