German finance minister presses for intervention on energy prices

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has called for state intervention to tackle high energy prices, driven by the Iran war. His proposals include a windfall tax, lower energy taxes and a cap on fuel prices. However, these proposals are opposed by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and Chancellor Friedrich Merz, both members of the conservative Christian Democrats. The government introduced a measure limiting petrol stations to raise prices just once a day, but it has failed to reduce costs. Monika Schnitzer, head of a council of economic experts advising the German government, also criticised state intervention in fuel prices, suggesting people should reduce consumption.
