Maria Del Refugio Avalos, a 40-year-old mother from East Los Angeles, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of her 4-year old daughter. The girl was found unresponsive in a vehicle in East LA just over two years ago. A jury found Avalos guilty of second-degree murder and assault on a child causing death, despite a lack of a special finding that the crime was done with premeditation. The prosecution argued that Avalos used the girl as a pawn in her dispute with the girl's father. The child's family identified her as Mia Gonzalez.
