Muslim-run ICNA Relief Food Pantry in Glendale Heights, suburban Chicago, is dealing with a shortage of halal meat during Ramadan. Volunteers at the pantry were putting out large boxes of vegetables and fruit, and trays of breads, buns, and cookies from a nearby bakery. The demand has been increasing, with Reem Almourad, a Syrian mother of five, expressing a struggle to stretch her weekly food pantry trips. The pantry, which serves about 400 families a week, uses monetary donations to replenish its supply. The shortage has led to more frequent visits from non-Muslim neighbors and volunteers.
