Federal judge blocks Arkansas’ Ten Commandments law

A federal judge has permanently blocked six Arkansas school districts from enforcing a state law requiring displays of the Ten Commandments, declaring it unconstitutional. The law, Act 573 of 2025, requires public schools to prominently display a "historical representation" of the Commandments in classrooms and libraries. Seven families of various religious and nonreligious backgrounds sued against the Fayetteville, Springdale, Bentonville, and Siloam Springs school districts, claiming the law violated their First Amendment rights. The ACLU of Arkansas praised the decision, stating public schools cannot promote or impose religious doctrine on students. The Arkansas attorney general is reviewing the opinion and will appeal.
