A new report by the Consumer Federation of America has revealed that Massachusetts consumers are losing an estimated $2.4 billion annually to online scams, far more than official estimates. The biggest culprits are Meta's Facebook and Instagram. The report found that 83 percent of all online cybercrime losses are scams, with the rest attributed to other digital offenses like ransomware or malware. The average per capita loss in Massachusetts is $339. However, the actual loss reported in 2024 is $338,872,378, compared to a true loss of $2.,09.
