California Gov. Gavin Newsom used his book, "Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery," to raise funds for his political action committee, Campaign for Democracy. The campaign offered supporters free copies of the book in exchange for donations. Approximately 67,000 people contributed to the fundraising pitch, accounting for about two-thirds of the memoir's total print sales. The PAC spent $1,561,875 on promoting the books through promotion, with the payments designated as "books at cost" and marking the committee's largest expense in the first quarter of 2026. Despite the hefty expenditure, Newsom's team maintains that the strategy paid off.
