The Avon Lake Police Department has introduced Ruby, a two-and-a-half-year-old chocolate Labrador Retriever, as a certified Crisis K9. Unlike traditional police dogs trained in apprehension or detection, Ruby's role is to provide emotional support and comfort to people in difficult situations. She recently completed training at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) and is part of the state's first crisis K9 certification class. Her training exposed her to a wide range of scenarios she could encounter on duty, including helicopters, sirens, horses, scuba divers and even bagpipes. Ruby has already made a significant impact in Avon lake, visiting schools, nursing homes and the local senior center, assisting during interviews with juveniles. The department plans to expand Ruby's presence through community engagement events and educational presentations.
