North Carolina governor asks for $211 million in ‘critical funding’ for state law enforcement

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein is urging the General Assembly to pass a Critical Needs Budget to fund state law enforcement. The $211 million would increase starting salaries for the State Bureau of Investigation, Highway Patrol and Department of Adult Correction. Without this funding, state troopers and SBI agents say recruiting is difficult without the funds. This is leading to large-scale vacancies when people leave for other departments or leave public safety altogether.
