The Centre for Global Development has warned that similar risks have emerged across Africa as the continent adopts more renewable energy. The report suggests that recycling of lead-acid batteries requires costly infrastructure and that the solution is to make recycling safer. The issue also extends beyond small workshops to larger facilities and global supply chains. Some countries are making progress in creating more structured battery recycling systems, particularly in Africa where batteries are imported rather than locally produced.
