Archaeologists have discovered the remains of the Continental Army barracks in Colonial Williamsburg, which British General Charles Cornwallis had ordered burned in 1781. The barracks, originally intended to house 1,000 soldiers and accommodate twice that number, were destroyed by fire, preserving artifacts that offer insights into Revolutionary War military life. Excavations uncovered an intact chimney base, gun hardware, and lead musket shots bearing soldiers' toothmarks. The site, which was occupied from 1777-1781, also contains maps and period documents referencing the construction of barracks in 1776 through 1777. The archaeologists have excavated only a small section of the area, but have already found bricks and an intact fireplace base.
