NASA's Artemis 2 mission to the moon, which launched on April 1, 2026, experienced a technical issue on its toilet during the launch. The toilet fan reportedly jammed, leading to a problem with the Universal Waste Management System (the Universal Waste System), which deals with urine collection. However, NASA confirmed that astronauts can still use the space commode to poop, but not urinate. The malfunction was caused by a controller issue on the toilet. The Artemis 2 astronauts use foot restraints to stay in place while using the toilet, which uses airflow to draw solid waste away from the body and into a collection device.
