New York City Democrats are proposing legislation to combat shoplifting by fineizing businesses and consumers. The legislation would cap self-checkout transactions at 15 items and require supermarkets and pharmacies to assign at least one worker for every three self-service lanes. Stores that fail to comply would face daily fines starting at $100. The proposal was co-sponsored by four fellow Democrats. However, Republican Councilwoman Joann Ariola called it "typical backwards leftist logic". The proposal comes as the Council introduces a bill to raise the city’s hourly minimum wage from $17 to $30 by 2030.
