Contra Costa County Supervisors John Gioia and Ken Carlson are facing no challengers in their June 2 reelection bids, but could face one of the county's toughest budget fights in years due to federal cuts threatening the local healthcare system. The county healthcare system could see $500 million in cumulative reductions by 2029, and a $1 billion deficit by 2031, according to interim chief financial officer Brian Buchanan. The projected shortfall is due to Medicaid reductions and new eligibility requirements approved by congressional Republicans and signed by President Donald Trump. Giaia has served on the Board of Supervisors since 1998 and Carlson represents District 1 in District 4. If approved by a majority of voters, the measure is expected to raise about $150 million a year. However, regardless of Measure B's fate, the board will have to make some challenging budget decisions. The top priority for both incumbents is preserving healthcare, health clinics, access to healthcare and food assistance.
