Chesterton, Valparaiso students debate data centers’ impact on the environment

The 17th annual environmental debate between Chesterton and Valparaiso High School students took place at the ValParaiso Chain of Lakes Watershed Group’s 17th environmental debate. The debate focused on the impact of data centers' power-hungry nature and the potential impact on water supply. Valparaso's Tania Bot argued that data centers should be restricted to areas where they can be powered by green energy, citing the impact on the environment and economic stability of the Strait of Hormuz war between the US and Iran as a primary issue. A large data center generates $243.5 million in local economic activities and $9.9 million in state and local taxes during the construction and operation, once it is operational, it generates $1.1 million in total.
