A group of Republicans are threatening to block passage of the 21st Century Renewing Opportunity in the American Dream (ROAD) to Housing Act of 2025, which aims to increase affordable housing supply and reduce federal bureaucracy. The bill includes a provision that prevents the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC), which will cease effective on Dec. 31, 2030. However, some members of the Grand Old Party argue that this isn't strong enough and that a CBDC would give the Fed "unprecedented power" over Americans' finances. The presidential administration has supported the bill, including the provision on the CBDC ban.
