The Grateful Dead has launched Play Dead, a streaming platform dedicated to the band's extensive archival recordings. The app was developed in conjunction with Rhino Entertainment, which has exclusively licensed the Dead’s intellectual property since 2006. Play Dead will offer high-resolution streaming of all previous archival releases, including roughly 300 concerts, many previously only available as physical-only releases. Subscriptions will cost $9.99/month or $99.99 per year. The service will also offer two new vault releases per week, increasing the volume of new archival material available. The launch of Play Dead was announced by nugs founder/CEO Brad Serling, who launched the platform in the late '90s.
