Evanston-born Patrick Hanley won the Democratic nomination for the 9th District State Senate in the Democratic primary, defeating Rachel Ruttenberg. The Associated Press called the race a little after 11 p.m. with Hanley receiving 51.6% of the vote over Ruttenburg’s 48.4%. Hanley's victory is likely to secure a seat in November's general election against Republican candidate Tom Lally. If elected, Hanley plans to focus on his first 30 days in office on protecting Illinoisans from a federal government that is losing its way and creating a state that is more affordable, greener, and that is growing. He also plans to explore ranked choice voting and improve legislation on voting.
