Cuba ‘categorically’ rejects prospect of removing Diaz-Canel in US talks
Published on March 20, 2026.
The Cuban government has denied that it is negotiating with the US over the fate of its president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, in relation to a leadership shake-up. Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio stated that the political system of Cuba was not up for negotiation. This contradicts reports that the US government is seeking the removal of Diaz-Cel. This is similar to what was implemented in Venezuela after President Donald Trump's attempt to abduct and imprison Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Critics argue that such a plan would leave the family of Fidel Castro in positions of power and would not eliminate a government accused of violent repression against its people. Despite this, President Diaz Canel is the first president in Cuba not to be a part of the Castro family since 1976.
