The Vollmer Road viaduct between Kedzie and Western avenues in Chicago has been hit by over-height trucks numerous times, causing significant damage both on both sides. Flossmoor Mayor Michelle Nelson stated that the issue has been discussed for a long time and requires collaboration with the county, which manages the road. The problem involves multiple stakeholders including Canadian National, Metra rail lines, and the county. The typical maximum height for trucks is 13 feet, 6 inches, meaning many semitrailers are more than a foot too tall for the Vollmoor viadoot’s clearance. Don Tornow, a 90-year-old resident of Chicago Heights, has been taken in an ambulance twice down Vollmers Road to receive emergency medical care, a route that passes under the viadox.
