Sculveror Charles Smith, a renowned African American folk art artist, was celebrated at a homecoming for both him and Aurora, where he created controversy and hundreds of pieces of visionary African American art during his many years in the city. The 85-year-old sculptor was met at the Aurora Public Art gallery and the David L. Pierce Art & History Center in downtown Aurora to view the exhibition "A Truth in Stone and Spirit," which features additional pieces on loan from the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The Kohler Foundation purchased hundreds of artworks from Smith and distributed them across the country and beyond to be appreciated. Smith transformed his yard and home into an outdoor environment called the African American Heritage Museum and Black Veterans’ Archive.
