The Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, Nancy Metayer Bowen, was shot and killed in an alleged domestic violence incident on April 1, four months after her brother died by suicide. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is a suspect in her murder and fled to Plantation, Fla., where he was taken into custody. The death comes as a wake-up for the public servant who was named the first Black woman elected to the Coral Springs Commission in 2020. The community mourns the loss of Metayer-Bowen, describing her as a "light in our community" and "grounded in compassion, strength, and an unwavering commitment to others." Florida District 23 Congressman Oliver Larkin shared a statement about Metayer Bowen's death.
