Los Angeles has enlisted Waymo and Waze to combat potholes in a pilot program that uses self-driving vehicles to identify and share the data with city officials. The move comes as the city struggles to maintain its road repairs, with only 310 miles of road repaired in fiscal year 2025, a significant decrease from the previous year. The pilot program uses Waymo's autonomous fleet to detect damaged roads, which is then fed into Waze's traffic data-sharing platform to flag trouble and alert drivers to rough pavement. The program is currently operating in five metro areas, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, and plans to expand it to colder-weather cities.
