A Tennessee library director, Luanne James, has refused to relocate LGBTQ+ children's books from youth sections to adult areas, citing the First Amendment. James argued that this move violates the community's right to information and infringes on free speech. The Rutherford County Library Board had voted to relocate more than 190 books, many with LGBTQ+ themes, from children’s and teen sections. Board Chair Cody York argued that the decision was intended to limit children's access to content the board considers inappropriate. National groups have supported James, with PEN America stating that children and teens deserve access to diverse books that represent their identities and stories. The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee warned that the government cannot censor books based on their ideas.
