Dear Abby, in her early 80s, experienced a period of mean-spirited teasing at a home where her friend's children and husband, both in their 30s, made fun of her hearing or mental alertness. The teasing escalated when the children or husband made "innocent" remarks about her hearing, sight, or word searching, which they used to demean her. This behavior led to an early exit from the house and subsequent occurrence of similar behavior. I was ashamed to not have stood up at the time and am now considering caring for my grandson longer. Grandmother, who has been caring for him since he was 2½ months old, may not be able to afford day care due to the high cost of day care.
