Sleep deprivation can affect the body's appetite, mood, and even bladder, according to sleep disorder specialists. These symptoms can be found in many ways, including in the form of undiagnosed sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea, which can mimic or worsen ADHD symptoms in children. Not enough sleep can exacerbate problems with attention, behavior, and impulse control. Sleep deprivation also disrupts the balance of two key appetite hormones, ghrelin and leptin, and shifts the brain's reward system towards high-calorie foods. A recent study found that sleep deprivation caused the amygdala to react more strongly to negative stimuli, while weakening the brain region that helps regulate these reactions. Sleep-deprived participants are more likely to confess to something they didn't do, falsely claiming they haven't done anything.
