The Senior Citizens' Freedom to Work Act, proposed by Sen. Rick Scott, R-Florida, and Rep. Greg Murphy, would repeal a provision known as the retirement earnings test, which reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who start retirement benefits early and continue to work. The test affects those who claim Social Security before full retirement age, when beneficiaries are eligible for 100% of the retirement benefits they've earned. Individuals with lower incomes can see their monthly payments reduced depending on their circumstances. The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) is advocating for the repeal of the test, arguing that it could be a disincentive for individuals seeking to stay in the workforce without being punished or robbed of their hard-earned benefits. It remains to be seen whether the bill may gain traction on Capitol Hill.
