The SAVE America Act and Florida’s SB 1334, which recently passed, could potentially disenfranchise voters who have identity documents that do not match identically. These documents could pose problems for many of the more than 850,000 eligible Puerto Rican voters in Florida, including those who moved to the state after Hurricane Maria. The legislation would require many voters to produce documentary proof of citizenship such as a passport or birth certificate to register to vote. It is estimated that 21 million people in the US lack access to these documents. Critics argue that these laws are necessary to prevent non-citizens from voting, but the problem they claim to solve does not exist. Delmariea, senior counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF, urges Governor DeSantis to veto this unnecessary legislation.
