Cuba is restoring its energy system after a third nationwide collapse in a month, causing millions of people to remain without power. Some 72,000 customers in Havana, including five hospitals, had electricity restored early Sunday morning. The country is currently facing an unprecedented energy crisis, with its aging grid eroding and a U.S. energy blockade blamed for the outages. The Cuban Electric Union reported that the total disconnection was caused by an unexpected shutdown of a generation unit at the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant in Camaguey province. President Miguel Díaz-Canel has stated that Cuba has not received oil from foreign suppliers for three months and produces only 40% of the fuel it needs to power its economy. The last nationwide blackout occurred on Monday and took several days to restore power.
